The best historical fiction is when there is a bit of family history in it. In this story, set in Minnesota in the 1900s, the author has pulled in some of the stories she has heard of her family, who were emigrants who died of diphtheria in the 1890s.The main character in this story is Martin, and his family who go back to the family farm where everyone but his father died of diphtheria when he was just a baby. His father thinks they can farm the land to heal themselves after his oldest son died [...]

Martin and his family have moved out to the family homestead in Minnesota. They are hoping it will help them get over the death of the oldest son. His father was born there, but was raised by another family when his whole family died of diphtheria. Martin finds a his aunt Cora's diary in an old trunk in the barn and learns that on the day she died she buried the family dowry. Martin wants to figure out what the dowry was and where it is buried so he can help his family and get back to town where [...]

Search for the Homestead Treasure is a fabulous piece of middle grade fiction with literary merit you need to know about. Back in the day before my kids grew up and I was a homeschooling mom looking for great books to introduce to my kids, Ann's novel Search For the Homestead Treasure would have fit the bill perfectly. I would have also considered it a compelling family read-aloud. Search For the Homestead Treasure is the story of Martin Gunnarsson, a boy of fourteen who has had to resettle with [...]

I received a digital copy of this title from the publisher via Netgalley.Ten Second Synopsis:Martin has moved from everything he knows to try and farm his family's land in difficult conditions. There is a hint that his ancestors may have hidden something valuable somewhere around the farm, but Martin has bigger problems to worry about - like trying to stop the farm being sold out from under the family. This is an engaging family drama and historical fiction piece featuring friendship, hardship an [...]

In Ann Treacy’s debut novel, The Search for the Homestead Treasure, Martin Gunnarsson is not a farm boy, but he sure is working hard on the old family farm. He’s not quite a man, at age 14, but he’s now the man of the house with his father away. He wasn’t even born the oldest son, but now he is since his brother’s fatal accident. He’d rather be back in Stillwater, in town, with his friends, and his old life, the one where they were all together and his brother was still alive. But, h [...]

I am going to have to rethink my "historical fiction is not really my thing" stance. I think I'm finally realizing that epic historical sagas are not my thing. But when I read a middle grade novel (this is designated for teens, but I think it's upper middle grade) centered around one character I care about, and the hardships that character faces, I am hooked. And when the setting is so finely drawn that I learn a lot without even realizing it along the way (Gypsies in Minnesota? Who knew?), that [...]

I received an advanced copy of this from NetGalley. This is an excellent book for middle grade children. It takes place in Minnesota in the early 1900s. Fourteen-year-old Martin Gunnarsson travels with his family to an old homestead his father lived on before diptheria took his father, mother, and sister. There had always been rumors of a treasure hidden on the homestead, but it was never found. A diary that Martin finds in an old box might just have clues to its location. After his father is bad [...]

A wonderful example of historical fiction for the middle grade reader. In the early 1900s a middle grade-age boy moves with his family to Minnesota to begin a new life in a farming community where his family once lived. It is a struggle on many levels: the hard work, the loneliness and the quest to prove himself capable in the new setting. This story provides so many ways for middle grade readers to really experience the time period and immerse themselves in the differences and similarities. Bes [...]

Thank you to NetGalley for letting me review an advance copy. Let me start by suggesting that when you finish this book, make sure you read the author's note. This book was so good on its own, but the author's description of family history just made it that much better. This is a great historical fiction, and written well enough that I may as well have been watching a movie. I was completely engrossed in the story line. Martin and his family go through so much, but with the help of some unconven [...]

With a warm cup of tea, I totally enjoyed an afternoon with Martin. This is a wonderful book to read as a 65 year old Minnesotan, recalling visits to family farms and imagining what life was like for Martin. The book 's characters are well developed and the story honestly told about a tough time in history. There is witty dialogue and a lot to learn about gypsies.lling us to tolerance and acceptance, a currently needed reality in our world. I especially want my grandchildren to read this book an [...]

A young boy and his family move back to their father's childhood homestead to try their hand at farming. The family is still in shock at the death of the beloved older son and Martin, the middle child, will give this isolated life a year before he plans to head back to Stillwater and his friends. While his father is away earning money at a lumber mill, Martin finds the diary of his Aunt Cora and discovers the farm may be hiding a treasure. Excellent historical fiction. The small print may be a c [...]

I could be reading many other things, but found myself coming back to this book, a page-turner that kept me interested in a way that some movies meant for kids are great for adults too. It's a compelling and poignant story, with remarkable imagery that absolutely transports you to early 20th century Minnesota. I'll be purchasing copies for my nieces, nephews, grandchildren, AND 90-year-old parents!

Great story about an old family homestead, farming, gypsies, a young girls diary, and a 14 year-old boy's journey to responsibility. Diary entries are dispersed throughout the story reveal a little of the past each time. You learn along with the main character about his Aunt's life on the homestead. A feel great story and quick read. I loved it.

I really enjoyed this story. As a Minnesota native whose ancestors homesteaded here, it was particularly interesting to me. It was a quick, easy read and didn't have anything in it that I would find objectionable for my children to read. It gave an interesting peek into the history of Minnesota. The book was well-written and structured. Definitely worth picking up.

This was my fist NetGalley book and I was pleasantly surprised. A good read despite some formatting issues I experienced with my Kindle app. A well woven story with endearing characters and some mystery to boot. A good choice for reading aloud to children, but mature enough to hold an adult reader's interest.

This copy is an uncorrected proof that I won from . Now that is out of the way, I want to say this was an amazing read with an unexpected ending. It's a story of unexpected friendship, hard work and family. I could very easily visualize the surroundings on the farm and almost reach out and touch things. I certainly recommend this book to young adults and adults alike.

So many books today are flash and bang without touching on the heart of the story, not so with this gem. I loved Martin as his adventures lead him to realize that treasures and life important things are not just things. A perfect book for kids to read especially in this day,
