John Lutz uses one approach to writing all his books. Sometimes this method of using current events intertwined with past history really works and sometimes it falls short. Serial is one of John's better outings with excellent character development with some real toe-curling suspense added at just the right times. The police detective-turned-private dick is hired once again by the NYC police to investigate a serial killer nicknamed The Skinner. While the Skinner claims his victims, we follow Fran [...]
This was the first of the Frank Quinn series I'd read and I doubt if I'll read another. I'm not squeamish but the descriptions of violence in this serial killer story seemed way over the top. That, and the back story of the tortuous relationship between the two main investigators made reading this book a chore.
This was a terrific book!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I am extremely glad that I have found another author that genuinely enjoy and has series. This book kept you on the edge of your seat always wanting to continuing your reading. The pieces seemed to fit until you reached the end and saw the surprise that you should have seen all along. Will definitely read more by the author!!!
I picked this New Author because of a comment made by one of my Favorite Authors, Harlan Coben John Lutz writing is so GOOD you don't want to put the book down till your done. So glad I have a few more of his books :-) Storyline and character's Exceptional!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed John Lutz writing, I downloaded this purely because it sounded like my cuppa tea and it was one of the books recommended for me by based on my usual reading and it was also free at the time, I absolutely loved it. It's a little hard to stomach in places, there's some very vivid and horrific descriptions of some truly horrifying murders in here, so it's not for the faint hearted. I for one, love a good horror, I think it's part of the human experience to feel fear and horror [...]
This is a great serial killer thriller! As an author of the serial killer mystery Absolution, I'm a huge admirer of John Lutz. I've read many but not all of his books. This is a good thing, because there are a few more of his well-written thrillers that I can look forward to reading. What I love about his books: Lutz always grabs me by the throat with the first line. "Millie Graf's feet were sore." How can you not love the woman? And that's the point. You meet and spend just enough time with the [...]
Serial is a fantastic read. It keeps you gripped from the start and the gritty detail of the characters and crimes committed do no leave much to the imagination! One of my favourite aspects of this book is that the chapters, even though everything is described profoundly, are short. This enables the reader to put the book down at regular intervals, which is handy if you are reading while working, and you can keep up with the story and its fast pace action whilst the events are embedded on your mi [...]
John Lutz scares me again! Another serial killer is loose in New York City and Frank Quinn and Associates are assigned by the Commissioner to catch the brutal killer. The killer is called "The Skinner". (Use your imagination). What makes the Quinn novels really frightening to me is that Lutz introduces each victim. You get to know them. You get a perfect picture of who they are and how they live. You cheer for them and then follow them to their horrifying deaths. There are lots of twists and tur [...]
Not only a serial killer story, but a complex one. There's lots of jumping around and the second half better than the first. I get the sense the author likes his serial killer, but this listener, not so much. 5 of 10 stars
I’m not really sure how to rate or describe this book. It took me two months and reading two other books in between, to read it. BUUTTTwhen I was reading, I really enjoyed it! From the very first page, I was in it! I wanted to know. And by the last 1/4 of the book, I was walking down halls at work reading because I couldn’t put it down. Women are being brutally murdered, and I mean, this get graphic. And I felt terrible did these women! It was like I knew what was going to happen and kept ho [...]
started great, confusion at end
Absolutely loved it! Jaw dropping twist for an ending, and quite the page turner. Couldn't put it down!!
Loved this book!! I was very surprised by the ending.
I was really hoping that I would love this book. I looked forward to reading it for months. And alas I was quickly disappointed. The book descriptive, good characters, and sufficiently creepy that it had all the makings of a good story. Yet this was my journeyPage 100: I have a feeling I know exactly what's going to happen with this secondary storyline. Page 200: Yep, I can tell you that is precisely where this is going, otherwise there's no point for the secondary plot being there in the first [...]
Frank Quinn is an ex New York police officer. He is a private investigator and along with other PI’s, is on the case of The Skinner. This serial killer tortures, violates, and skins his victims. Frank is called in to look at a victim and realizes that he knows her from years prior. Then a victim is found that was tortured and such but manages to escape. As Frank and the group try to hunt him down, they have to find how the victims are linked together, and catch him before he kills anyone else. [...]
John Lutz writes about Frank Quinn, ex detective who is still connected with NYPD. In this case we have another serial killer (the title does give it away!). The story line was very good. I liked the characters on the detective side.I like that Lutz gets us to know each victim just a little bit before they get killed (while at the same time not liking it because it makes it harder to bear the quite vivid description) because that adds to the story and stops us readers from becoming detached well [...]
This is my introduction to John Lutz's work and in particular to Frank Quinn. I found the book extremely interesting and I never got tired of the twists and turns as the story developed. It keeps the reading wondering what is going to happen next. Lutz's characters are believable and draw the reader into the story. He does an excellent job of going back and forth between two geographically separated areas and cases seamlessly so that the reader is not concerned with either case independently but [...]
If you like books about twisted serial killers and the detective teams hunting them, then this book will be up your alley. The book flips around between lots characters with each chapter fairly short and focusing one of them. There is Frank Quinn, the detective, and the other PIs in his agency, the victims, the killer, and then a couple other characters in a different state and timeline entirely. How the past timeline catches up with the present timeline and ultimately meshes together is satisfyin [...]
Not liking it much. The relationship between Pearl and Quinn (really between anyone she interracted with) was annoying. However I did like one character towards the end, Mrs Cranston. Lucky me I stuck it out, although I was tempted to call it quits long before that. Here is Mrs. Cranston in all her glory, I dont know if she was hard of hearing or just had selective hearing."Is that a wallet?" (Mrs. Cranston)"Sort of." (Quinn)"Are you offering me some kinda bribe?" (Mrs. Cranston)"Showing you my [...]
4.5 Rating. The reason it wasn't a full 5 star was because of the romance aspect, I'm not saying it should become extinct in books, but for the amount that was in the book what was the point. They could have used it to drop another clue.I liked all the characters, Pearl got on my nerves a little, I get that women should be a little standoffish, but she was downright rude sometimes. All my sympathy went to beth, talk about bad luck. I also liked Lido too, although I think Quinn needs to help his a [...]
SERIAL by John Lutz is a heart pounding #6 “Frank Quinn” novel. It is written with depth, details, and the characters will have you on the edge of your seat. It has a devious serial killer, torture, murder, police procedural, with twists and turns that will leave you breathless. It will grab you from the first sentence to the last with a bit of romance. When one of the victims is gagged, tortured, and violated but survives, only one man can help her hunt the killer that is Frank Quinn.Frank recognizes [...]
A well written book featuring ex-NYC cop, Frank Quinn, and his patchwork group of former law enforcement officers who are highly regarded as the best at tracking down serial killers. Serial is fairly graphic on how the killer leaves his victims so the squeamish should skim over the grisly parts and focus on how Quinn etal work doggedly to find the killer. This procedural jumps back and forth from a small town in Missouri to New York City and it took almost the entire 500 pages to learn what the [...]
The book starts out with a rape victim being slowly tortured to death. The killer peels away the victim's skin and wakens her with ammonia when she falls unconscious. This goes on until she dies. Frank Quinn is hired by the police commissioner to find the killer. The victime had sent an innocent man to prison for her rape. He was later cleared with DNA evidence and released. Each future victim had done the same thing. The search narrowed to the men who had been wrongfully convicted. But, Which o [...]
I quite enjoy serial killer plots, and although the protagonist in this one was a bit gruesome, the book stands up well to others in the genre. It's well detailed, both in the plot and characters, and although there sometimes seems a bit too much happening with sub-plots, twists and dead-ends, it all links up well and adds depth and suspense to the story. There are a few things that stop if from being really great, there doesn't seem any great urgency to track down the killer, and there's a lot [...]
This was the first book I have read by John Lutz. It was an intense read that kept me on the edge of my seat. If you are a fan of a good murder mystery and don't mind some graphic details, this is a good pick. The book focuses on a series of murders that happen to rape victims that mistakenly identify the wrong attacker. Subsequently, the wrongly accused attackers are released from prison based on DNA evidence. There are some unexpected twists as the plot unfolds. This was a story that was hard [...]
In New York City, women are being brutally murdere;, slowly tortured until death finally takes them, but not until the killer, dubbed the Skinner by the press, has had his fun. At first, the murders seem random, however, PI Quinn soon learns that each of these women had mistakenly ID the wrong guy for a rape they did not committ. With the advancements made in DNA research, these wrongly imprisoned men have been released, but which of those men is the killer? As the number of victims grows, PI Qu [...]
More like three and one-half stars. My first John Lutz book. Above-average detective thriller, but nothing out of this world. Still, I'll try Mr. Lutz again. In this one, a deranged religious zealot goes about NYC gruesomely torturing and skinning his female victims to death. The hero (Quinn) and his side-kick female partner (Pearl) put it all together - eventually - with a nice supporting cast of NYPD's finest. Only problem is the book's ending leaves too many loose ends loose and nver realkly [...]
Brilliant!! This was my first John Lutz, and I picked it up because I appreciate a good book cover. Along with the aesthetically pleasing cover was an equally pleasing title, I didn't read the back cover, just based my purchase purely on first sight. This was no disappointment, it was gripping from the very beginning. I was playing "who did it" the entire book. The characters were well developed and interesting. There were twists and turns right until the very end, I couldn't wait to discover wh [...]
Serial was my first outing with John Lutz and it was just good enough that I will look for other opportunities. The prose is written with a style and pace kind of like watching an old Dragnet tv series updated to add women PI's to the script.I thought the story offered a very unique twist pulled from todays headlines where men have been wrongfully accused of rape and murder only to be exhonerated years later by DNA. The study in humanity and society on how these men, some now victims themselve, [...]
Is it me or is this one a lot like the next one? Also, why did the killer stop doing things halfway through the murders. He never answered the questions of the necklace and the names on the mirror. I was bothered by how many things were the same with the next book, which I mistakenly read first. The murders get into the apartments the same way, the women hide their keys in the same spot. They know they are being followed. Same. Same. Same. Write something different.
